Planning Permission for art deco project ahead of schedule!

Posted: 28 July 2023

Wow, we just got Planning Permission for our art deco inspired project two weeks ahead of schedule! This is really rare – in over 25 years of working, this is only the second or third time it’s happened. Our clients must be really special!

Here’s a bit more background information on this exciting project. We’re helping to give a much-needed facelift to a house that’s been badly extended in the past. It has a hodgepodge of single-story extensions with leaking flat roofs that don’t connect well to the house or the outside spaces.

We’re creating a large open-plan kitchen/dining space and a standalone garage and workshop. The original design had an attached garage and workshop, but we felt the large roof mass was too dominant and ‘in your face’. We also suggested that the client’s ideal scheme was too big, so we agreed to scale it back a bit to save money and energy while still giving them what they want.

We’ve agreed to go with a detached garage building, which will create a smaller roofscape and be less visually obtrusive. “Crittall” style feature doors and glazing in aluminium are going to be used, which should be a bit cheaper than genuine steel-framed Crittall glazing, and should be more energy efficient. We’ve also chosen Flemish bond brickwork for the rear wall sections, which will give a slightly different look and feel and also provide a nice contrast to the existing render.

We’re about to start work on the technical detail design for Building Regulations. We’ll keep you updated!
