Judging Excellence: A Deep Dive into the Master Builder Awards

Recently, we had the privilege of serving as online judge for the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) 2025 Master Builder Awards. It was an undertaking that presented a significant challenge, requiring us to assess and score a remarkable 54 individual entries. Despite the sheer volume of work (and perhaps a touch of last-minute judging!), we were genuinely impressed by the calibre of submissions. It’s clear that many contractors out there are committed to delivering high-quality, professional work and striving for excellence from the outset.

Judging Sustainable Construction Practices at the Master Builder Awards

One area that particularly caught my attention, or rather, its relative absence, was the Sustainable Building Award category. There weren’t many entries, and those that were submitted tended to focus heavily on operational energy savings. While crucial, this overlooks a vital component of true sustainable construction practices: embodied carbon and embodied energy. These elements, which account for the environmental impact of building materials and construction processes, are incredibly important in my opinion and should ideally form a more significant part of the judging criteria. Moving forward, we hope to see a greater emphasis on promoting a more holistic understanding of sustainable building within the FMB awards.

Celebrating Achievement: The Federation of Master Builders Northern Awards Ceremony

A few months after completing the judging, we had the pleasure of attending the Federation of Master Builders Northern Awards Ceremony in Newcastle. Having helped judge the Yorkshire awards, it was fantastic to finally meet some of the dedicated builders and other industry professionals in person. The evening was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the hard work and commitment evident in the entries. It was truly inspiring to see the recognition given to businesses delivering exceptional quality buildings and outstanding customer service. On a personal note, Newcastle proved to be just as cool as I remembered from previous visits, albeit a few years ago.

The experience of judging and attending the Master Builder awards reinforced my belief in the high standards within the FMB community. Are there any aspects of sustainable construction practices you believe are often overlooked in industry awards?
