Finding the right architectural technologist for heritage and retrofit projects is about more than just drawings; it is about finding someone who truly understands existing buildings, traditional fabric, and technical detail done right.
The value of technical insight in heritage and retrofit projects
Check out this fantastic review from a recent client at the end of last year. To support a survey report, I completed several freehand sketches illustrating the specific problems caused by repointing solid masonry walls with cement mortar rather than traditional lime mortar. I think the client liked them!

“I asked Nathan to draw up some architectural sketches for me, and he did an excellent job from start to finish. He was efficient, responsive, and extremely strong on technical detail. His drawings were clear, accurate, and well-considered, making it easy to visualise the end result.
Having previously worked as a construction project manager, design manager, and clerk of works, and now practising as a building surveyor, I’ve worked with many architects over the years. It’s fair to say that I can recognise the difference between a good architect and a bad one, and Nathan definitely stands out as one of the good ones.
What impressed me most was his understanding of existing buildings and retrofit work. He has a genuine appreciation for traditional construction methods and how to integrate modern improvements without compromising the character or integrity of the building. Nathan also has an excellent understanding of the use of lime in traditional buildings and how incorrect materials or methods can cause long-term damage to brickwork and masonry.
His sensitivity to these details really sets him apart from others in the field.
Nathan’s communication and professionalism throughout were first-class. He kept me informed at every stage, delivered work on time, and was always open to discussion and collaboration. It’s clear that he genuinely cares about delivering the best possible result for his clients.
Working with Nathan has been an absolute pleasure. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for an architect who is skilled, reliable, and especially knowledgeable in the retrofit and traditional building sector. Highly recommended.”

A huge thanks to Rikki Savage for the opportunity here; it was a pleasure to produce some digital freehand sketching for this project.
