🌴 ‘Exotic project’ – that’s what the Structural Engineer said on their first look at the design drawings.
Here are some initial sketches and studies as we explore the use of exposed flat roof joists for a self-build extension project in Sheffield. 🌴 This ‘exotic project’ has certainly presented some interesting design challenges.
Initial Design Considerations
The brief outlined the desire for exposed flat roof joists, visible internally, which would extend beyond the external walls to form a substantial overhanging roof canopy. Initially, we considered arranging the joists in regular, rectangular bays (as shown in image 3), recognizing this as the most straightforward and cost-effective approach.
Exploring an Exotic Project Idea
During one of our discussions, we made an off-the-cuff suggestion to explore a curved or radial, fanned arrangement of the joists. It seemed like this could create a striking visual feature if successfully executed. To our surprise, the Client expressed enthusiasm for investigating this more unconventional idea for this exotic project.
Visualisation and Refinement
Consequently, we proceeded to develop this concept further. The 3D model proved invaluable in helping the clients visualise the various possibilities as we explored several options dynamically during a design review meeting. Ultimately, we decided on an arrangement with a central pivot point located in the middle of the extension, with all the joists radiating outwards at equal intervals. This design necessitates a central post and a custom-made steel bracket for adequate support (illustrated in image 2).
Current Progress and Future Steps
This design remains a work in progress, with several details still requiring resolution and refinement. However, we are making steady progress towards finalising these aspects. We recently submitted the Planning Application and are hopeful for a smooth and timely approval from the council.
This is proving to be a particularly fascinating project, especially given the significant emphasis on incorporating low-carbon building materials and techniques. This includes exploring concrete-free foundations and utilising a timber frame with timber cladding. We intend to share further updates in the near future, specifically detailing our approach to the concrete-free foundations, as the existing ground conditions and the need to preserve a cherished magnolia tree are certainly adding layers of complexity. We feel privileged to be helping guide our Clients with this exciting project.
