Phase 1 of the community coffee shop project for Open House is starting to take shape with impressive strides over the last few weeks. This initial piece of work focusses on the crucial task of reinforcing and stabilising the existing building structure. A steel frame is being carefully integrated within and around the old building, ensuring everything is strong enough to support the new open-plan layouts that have been designed. Phase 2 will delve into the internal fit-out, encompassing elements like new commercial staircases, accessible toilets, thermal upgrades, a modern heating system, and enhanced electrical and lighting systems.
No Easy Feat: Inserting Steel Beams with Precision
The challenge of inserting replacement steel beams into the existing building façade has proven to be quite a demanding undertaking. Meticulous planning and execution were essential to ensure the structural integrity of the building throughout this process.
Complex Temporary Works: A Forest of Steel
Intricate temporary works structural design and temporary propping, that extend two floors, down to the cellar below, were required for this complex task. The photos reveal a maze of steel props and girders, with the old floors strategically cut in half to accommodate this supportive framework. This ensures the building’s stability while the old rotten oak beams are removed and the new galvanised steel beams are inserted.
Navigating Challenges: Location and Occupied Neighbours
The project’s complexity is increased further by the building’s location on a bustling Sheffield street and the proximity of occupied neighbouring buildings. The construction team have demonstrated exceptional skill and adaptability to navigate these challenges, while keeping everyone safe and sound.
A Testament to Professionalism and Teamwork: Creative Building Projects
Seriously impressed with the dedication and expertise of the Creative Building Projects – team, particularly the site crew. Well done! As is sometimes the case, the complexities of the construction work and temporary works weren’t always fully contemplated when preparing the overall finished design but the team at Creative have delivered the goods and made it work.
