Architectural fees – what you really get for your money

‘Why are your fees so high? All you’re doing is a few drawings.’

The sentence every architectural technologist / architect hears. Usually right before the magic starts.

It’s a fair question, just based on the wrong assumption.

Because design isn’t about making things look nice.

It’s about solving hundreds of invisible problems before a single line gets drawn.

Before I even open the drawing software, I’ve already:

✏️ Walked your site, met your neighbours, checked your drains, daylight, slopes, and access.
✏️ Read the planning policies, the building regs, and the Party Wall Act.
✏️ Talked to builders, engineers, and surveyors about what’s actually practical.
✏️ Explored ten different ideas before you ever see one.

So when you see a ‘few drawings,’ what you’re actually looking at is weeks of alignment, simplification, and stress removed from your shoulders.

The drawings are just the visible tip of a very large iceberg.

That’s what you’re paying for: clarity, confidence, and a plan that works first time.

Because cheap drawings cost you more when the build goes wrong or an important bit of legislation gets missed.

My fees reflect the time it takes to get it right, not the time it takes to draw it.
