Area cost: £1917 / m²

Two storey side extension to create a Dining Room and Porch at Ground Floor with a Bedroom above on First Floor.

The Clients specifically identified Modernist Span houses and the respected 20th century architect, Eric Lyons, as sources of inspiration and the need for lots of natural light.

High quality, cost effective external materials were used with features that are reminiscent of the Span house values and appearance. Such characteristics are the full height shaped feature windows, standing seam flat roofs and vertical cladding.

The vertical cladding is Wood Plastic Cladding [WPC] made by Dura Cladding. Organic recycled wood dust is mixed with resin to create a timber looking cladding plank that is rot proof with low maintenance.

Problems Solved:

Building on a steep slope + Planning Permission + Building Regulations + structural co-ordination + negotiating cost savings. Special thermal calculations were also required to ensure the large amounts of glass were permitted

What our customers say

We are really happy with how, what seemed like a big undertaking, in terms of invading our homespace – went so smoothly

“We engaged Nathan in 2014 to design us a two-storey extension with porch, which was completed in 2016. We were impressed with Nathan’s meticulousness and attention to detail throughout. To give a specific example, during preliminary discussions we mentioned that we would like the extension to be in a modernist 1960s style similar to the work of the ‘Span’ architectural practice helmed by Eric Lyons . At our next meeting, Nathan subsequently turned up with a book about Span and Lyons which he had bought specially for background research on our project.

Our site was also quite tricky from a topographical point of view but this was not something which ever seemed to faze Nathan.

We were probably not the most organised of clients but Nathan was always there to gently keep on track and chase matters up when necessary. He produced charts predicting the timescale that the project was likely to take which was really useful in order to plan our family lives around the building work. He also produced detailed architectural plans, including 3D visualisations which were really useful to give an idea of what the completed build was going to look and feel like.

Nathan is very approachable and friendly and was always there to deal swiftly with any questions or issues which arose from the early planning stages to completion of the build and beyond. We are very grateful to Nathan for helping us to expand our home into the perfect size for a family of four. We are really happy with how, what seemed like a big undertaking, in terms of invading our homespace – went so smoothly. We have already recommended Nathan and Nick to a few people both in person and online whenever anyone asks.”
