A previously extended house was not completed to the owner’s satisfaction. We worked together to deliver a simple rear extension and complete Kitchen / Dining remodel to finish things off properly and to give the Clients exactly what they wanted. Parts of the previous building work were failing and we helped put them right. A small infill extension, with a feature lantern roof light, was designed to provide more space and natural light to the Sitting Room. A complete Kitchen remodel was also completed to provide a stunning open plan Kitchen + Dining + Social space. This approach resulted in a traditional design with a modern twist, that is flooded with natural light.
You can watch a little video of the clients talking about their kitchen extension experience below.
At first glance the extension is a straight forward matching in design but there are several clever design details and techniques tucked away to create an extension that is far from ordinary. Such details are:
- The polyurethane flat roof with recessed hidden gutter built into the roof itself so there are no visible gutters.
- A ribbed design detail to the top of the flat roof to mimic a more expensive zinc metal standing seam roof covering.
- Sculpted feature lighting to the perimeter of the feature lantern roof window creates a subtle, warm glow when switched on, that makes the rooflight almost appear to float in the air.
- A specific type of flat roof build up was used, called a ‘cold deck roof.’ This helped keep the thickness and bulk of the flat roof to a minimum to ensure it was not too dominant and overpowering. Generally, under the Building Regulations, lots of insulation has to be used, which can often result in very clunky and thick roof build ups. Over the years we have worked out several intelligent ways to reduce flat roof build thicknesses.
The bespoke made to measure, handmade timber kitchen by My Fathers Heart is the centre piece of this project. It is simply stunning and continues to impress. The kitchen includes a central island unit with seating + perimeter units with lots of worktop and storage cabinets, taken right up to ceiling level. Some of the features include hand crafted solid wood units finished in Farrow and Ball colours + solid granite worktops + subtle cupboard lighting + top end appliances like the Bora induction hob with integrated downdraft extraction system [no overhead extractor fan] + Siemans ovens + Quooker filtered boiling water tap.
No expense was spared with high quality materials used throughout. Such as clay bricks + Tricoya modified wood [guaranteed rot proof for about 50 years!] + timber French doors [old ones reused] + polyurethane roof covering + lantern rooflight with dual-coloured frames + Omnie TorFloor underfloor heating + genuine oak parquet flooring + porcelain floor tiles + handmade solid wood kitchen + solid granite worktops.
The clients continue to be over the moon about their completed project and their only regret is that they didn’t employ us to help design and project manage the old extension project that didn’t go so well!
