Provisional Sum

► A Provisional Sum is an allowance or reasonable estimate, that is inserted into tender documents for a specific element of the works that is not yet defined in enough detail for tenderers to accurately price.
► As provisional sums are replaced by valuations of the work actually done as the project progresses, the contract sum may increase or decrease.
► For example: Clinical wash hand basins + small stainless steel Kitchenette sink - provisional sum allowed = £1250. Actual confirmed cost = £1153. Slight decrease to total project cost of £97.
