Holiday ideas - staying at an architectural gem

From personal experience it’s usually during January, after the Christmas excitement has died down, that we start looking at holidays for the coming year and destinations. If you would like to stay in a house or apartment that is architecturally stimulating then check out some of the bespoke UK based properties from Living Architecture. Their aim is to commission carefully designed and thought-provoking domestic houses, to be rented by the public over a period of days and nights, providing an immersive holiday experience, created by some of the most relevant architects and artists working today.

Top image is Cité Radieuse - Charles-Édouard Jeanneret Le Corbusier [Marsiglia]. Cité radieuse [Radiant City] was designed by Charles-Édouard Jeanneret Le Corbusier and you can stay in some of the apartments.

Famously known as the Unité d'habitation by Le Corbusier. 'It is located in Marseille, France, and was built between 1947 and 1952. It proved enormously influential and is often cited as the initial inspiration of the Brutalist architectural style and philosophy.’ While this is a piece of architectural history I’m not fully convinced this ‘machine for living’ fully fulfilled the vision of it’s creator as this is what possibly paved the way for the concrete high rise blocks of the 1960’s and 70’s. Many of which are being demolished, possibly due to social exclusion and deprivation.

A House for Essex was designed by FAT Architecture and Grayson Perry.

A House for Essex - designed by FAT Architecture and Grayson Perry.

‘It is both an artwork in itself and the setting for a number of works by Perry exploring the special character and unique qualities of Essex. The building has been designed to evoke the tradition of wayside and pilgrimage chapels. It belongs to a history of follies, whilst also being deeply of its own time.’ It’s fair to say this project has received mixed views and it’s certainly quirky and unique.

Dune House was designed by Jarmund / Vigsnæs Architects.

Dune House - designed by Jarmund / Vigsnæs Architects.

‘It is located close to the picturesque village of Thorpeness in Suffolk, on an idyllic spot on the very edge of the sea, nestled among rolling dunes. Step from the living room directly onto the beach and enjoy extraordinary panoramic views over the sea from the terraces, bedrooms and bathrooms on the upper floor.’ This is a slightly more typical house in that is has relatively standard pitched roofs and walls albeit things are a bit wonky here and there, trying to be a bit different perhaps.

If you want to stay in a stylish house abroad then some of the places identified by the Archilovers team may be more up your street although although some are a bit more wacky, but all good for a decent holiday.

Buff & Hensman House was designed by Buff & Hensman Architects [Hollywood].

‘Hidden away on three quarters of an acre up Nichols Canyon in Hollywood you will find a very private rustic retreat estate property originally built in 1960 by famed post and beam architects Buff & Hensman and more recently restored and updated by the LA architectural design collective Commune.’ This is a more typical holiday rental home, luxury with a pool.

Happy holidays everyone!
