History

1997 - 2017, over 20 years of valuable experience

Ikonografik Design was formed in 2005 by Nathan Oliver and offers a friendly, personal service. Nathan has over 20 years’ experience gained while working at a number of large and small practices up and down the country, most notably Building Design Partnership [BDP - a major, award winning, international firm] where he was one of the senior designers on the c£550m Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. Nathan has also project managed complex projects of up to c£5m construction value. Other projects worked on range from other multi million pound schemes to smaller jobs in the region of £5, 000. These include healthcare, education, domestic, medical research, leisure, retail, offices, industrial, agricultural, student accommodation, churches and heritage properties.

People

Nathan has always enjoyed drawing, designing and solving problems creatively, this is why he decided to choose architecture as a career and this is what motivates him. He studied architectural technology at Huddersfield University and graduated in 1997 with a 2:1, achieving the highest grades each year. This was followed by becoming a professionally qualified Chartered Architectural Technologist and Chartered Environmentalist. Two industry standard Health and Safety qualifications are also held, the CSCS black card [manager] and white card [design]. A culture of lifelong learning is promoted and regular training is undertaken to keep up to date with industry developments, new methods and professional practice.

Buildings are essentially about people, the people who use and enjoy them, this is the key ingredient to understanding how to make buildings work. When it comes to architectural style Nathan is not overly influenced by modern design but rather traditional buildings that use conventional and modern materials and methods in an attempt to create functional, sensitive, striking and personal spaces. There is no attempt at a signature style, just an effort to achieve the client requirements. Nature always teaches and much of the natural world inspires the design process. This process always tries to respond to the specific location, context and environment in a thoughtful manner. Reducing the environmental impact of a building is always taken seriously and is an integral part of the design process but this has to be weighed up carefully against the potentially increased construction costs and feasible payback periods.

Trying to buck the trend against consumerism, changing fashions and ‘disposable architecture’ Nathan aims for attractive, durable and low maintenance buildings that stand the test of time.

This approach is summarised as four vital parts - People + Site + Environment + Durability.

In his spare time Nathan enjoys spending time with his family and friends and cycling around the Peak District. Nathan also volunteers as a Street Pastor as part of the Mercy Ministries Team at Christ Church Central in Sheffield. Other interests include strength and fitness, art and design, snowboarding, photography, walking, music and reading.
